And so it begins!

Today was my second day at the lab. It has been a great last few days, and I am going to love it here in Colima.

The group from the lab were still out in the field on Sunday, so I explored the city alone. Colima is so lush, speckled with parks and shaded with fruit trees. Mangoes have fallen right in front of me on the sidewalk while I walked around. It's much cooler outside than inside, so much of the community was walking about. Vendors selling aguas frescas, paletas, and tuba lined the streets and families crowded the parks.

Barely anybody speaks English here. I had quite a few moments where I just stared at a cashier blankly in confusion. "...no entiendo." I'm excited about the opportunity (or necessity) to work on my Spanish while I'm here.

I became so exhausted from the heat after walking around for several hours that I just crashed on the hammock in our courtyard underneath our avocado tree. It's not a bad place to be, I must say. This afternoon we set up my hammock double-decker style.

And meet Lucas and Kahlua!

The group came back from the volcano Sunday night. There is a girl from California, a boy from Chicago, a British girl and a British boy.  We went out for tacos.

The first day in the lab went well for the most part. The lab can really only operate with volunteers, and we have a lot of work to do. I spent the day learning new software and trying to organize some data. The lab is about as disorganized as any American geology lab, but Hark! we have (sort of) air conditioning. I will hopefully be undertaking a hydrothermal geochemistry analysis.

More details later!
